Sit Down and Eat Your Music Video

Have YOU seen the new video from Blick Van Glory? You should. It’s easy and fun. CLICK HERE.

It’s from the first single, “The Sophopmores.” To remind you latecomers, this my brother’s band, Blick Van Glory. He directed as well as starred in it. I was the art director, so you can marvel at all of the coffee cups, school spirit banners and breakaway desks.

That song and video was awesome. I loved it. I love the sound too. Nice job. Your brother’s band is getting a bookmark from me and maybe a post on my blog soon.

The video rocks–and not because I played the shocked teacher. The desks, bell and other things you created were just amazing. You are the MacGyver of art direction.

    Hey Cory!

Speaking of your brother… I finally got a chance this past week to sit down and watch the animated Curious George (Matthew O’Callaghan) movie. Ok, so I’m pretty sure that you and your brother didn’t work at all on this flick, so why did it remind me of Todd? AH! That’s the reason for this comment!

Like I’ve said before, running an online radio station dedicated to music used in animation means I get to listen to A LOT of cartoon soundtracks. I will not profess to be an expert, nor have I the schooling that you entertainment type people have. If I use the wrong words, or for that matter are completely off my rocker, please tell me!

So what is it of Jack Johnson’s soundtrack for CG that reminds me of your brothers work on HW? Cohesion.

Johnson’s work on CG is more tightly grouped in genre than HW soundtrack, but what I’m talking about is much deeper. There is just something there under it all that makes it all fit neatly in a single universe. Even when you put ‘Great Big World’ next to ‘Tree Critter’, you still know you are listening to the Hoodwinked soundtrack. For me, that adds to the entertainment value of the movie.

Compare that to soundtracks from ‘Shrek’ and to a lesser extent ‘Shark Tale’. Now, I’m not saying that a lot of work didn’t go into these soundtracks, or that a pop tune can never be used. In fact, I would have been insulted if a version of ‘Car Wash’ DIDN’T show up in Shark Tale. What I am saying is that these movies tend to use music not to bring the story together, but as ‘audio product placements’.

It’s my belief that music used in films should be secondary, or at the most on the same footing as the visuals. It’s refreshing when a movies like Hoodwinked, Curious Gerorge, Toy Story, etc all stick with ONE artist. That allows the soundtrack to fade into the background, which makes it much more powerful. Certainly more powerful than the musical offerings from ShrekGeorge, which simply jump up for 45 seconds screaming ‘Listen to me!!!! I’m popular!!!!’

Not to mention that since he’s your brother, he works cheap! 😀

Thanks for the nice comment. I’ll pass it along to Todd. I hope he can always do songs for my movies (if he has time). Jack Johnson is a great artist to be compared to!

If you get a chance to post this comment on Todd’s MYSPACE page (myspace/blickvanglory), I’m sure he’d appreciate it.
