I hate to see this film struggling at the box office, so I have to give it props. Most times, when I rave about “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” to friends, they are surprised. They tell me, “the ads didn’t make it look very good.”
Well, shame on you, marketing department! This thing is AWE-SOME.
It may be the coolest, most clever film I have seen all year. And visually groundbreaking, rebooting my expectations for what a film can be. Think “Sin City” to the next level… but with COLOR… and images that will delight you, not give you nightmares.
The reason this film catapults beyond your expectations is because the script is so, so brilliant and entertains on so many different levels. It’s a giant, dreamlike metaphor for the struggle to overcome the past baggage of ruined relationships, as well as the struggle to rebuild yourself and ultimately love yourself. See? Not in the ads.
I’m a big fan of Edgar Wright’s work, but “Shawn of the Dead” went too dark for me and the editing of “Hot Fuzz” gave me seizures. On this one, the man really fires on all cylinders. Easily his best work.
I hate to see GOOD FILMS not get the acknowledgement (and success) they deserve… so go see this crazy whirlwind of celluloid this week instead of “The Other Guys.”

Matt Baker and the popular fansite The Muppet Mindset have launched a campaign to persuade The Jim Henson Company to release unavailable music from the original Fraggle Rock television series on CD.
Take a moment to visit this great, comprehensive Muppet site and CAST YOUR VOTE. The world could use as much Fraggle attitude as we can give it right now. I mean, how can you “dance your cares away” if you don’t have all the right music?

I just caught this brand new word on Webster’s site today (the dictonary guys, not Emmanuel Lewis). It marks a trend I could get on board with.
RETROSEXUAL
Definition: A man who adopts a traditional masculine style in dress and manners.
As Lini S. Kadaba of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes, “Think of him as the anti-metrosexual, the opposite of that guy who emerged in the 1990’s in all his pedicured, moused-up, skinny-jeans glory. That man-boy was searching for his inner girl, it was argued. The retrosexual, however, wants to put the man back into manhood.” (Apr. 7, 2010)
I’m down with that. Bring back the fedoras and wingtips, fellas. Just hold the chauvinism.

If you want more of a detailed wrap-up of my time at Comic Con this year, I was guest host on a one-hour podcast with my friend Mark Steele. It was a fun show. You can listen here on the Steelehouse Podcast.
