Fraggle Party

I know you want more info on the movie, but I can’t give you any yet. But things are happening. I am encouraged and excited by some new progress and hopefully I will be able to give you a big announcement here very soon. But that’s all I can say.
New Fraggle designs by Dr. Romanelli

Until there is more to say about the movie, I can at least report on the stranger-than-fiction clash of culture that I attended last night. Quite simply, it was a “Fraggle Rock Party” hosted by upscale fashion label Dr. Romanelli (I went to him last year when I threw my back out — he’s good). There was a DJ playing Fraggle jams, there were T-shirts that cost too much, and there was Fraggle-shaped jewelry. Oh the glamour! The stars! Kevin Sorbo! Jennifer Love Hewitt! Jamie Kennedy! Okay… that was about it. Unless you count RED FRAGGLE, who was really the chick everyone was there to see.
Can I tell you how surreal it is to see Red getting bathed in the flashbulbs of paparazzi? I think she was told they were fireflies or something. Red was escorted by her “handler,” Karen Prell. Karen’s enthusiasm for the character and the Fraggle Rock brand is instoppable, and it was good to see her again.
Hey Red, nice bling…
I’m shallow enough to tell you that I am ticked that I got no swag at all. Come on! How about a postcard? Some stickers! A Doozer stick!
The other part of the night that was fun was taking my three year-old son as my “plus one.” It’s his first industry party! I was so proud. And he stayed cool and kept to the three-juice minimum.
What does a glitzy event like this mean? That Fraggle mania is in the air, without even making a movie yet. All kinds of pop culture glow is around this brand right now, and this helps us push the feature, big time. I’ll wrap this up with some pics from the night…

Check out the Fraggle van. It’s like they’re a whimsical A-Team.

Look! Real snow! In Beverly Hills!

Me and my “plus one” hanging with Red.

    Questions –

1). Is the "Red Fraggle" puppet currently being used in publicity going to be the same one used for filming the movie?

2). I know that you can not say much about the movie but in a visually-intensive movie such as "Fraggle Rock," would storyboarding be used with a script for pitching or is it first a script & then storyboarding once the project is "greenlit"?

3). What is one of your pet peeves when you see TV properties that were converted over to movies?

As a fan of "Fraggle Rock," I appreciate your efforts.

    Thank you.

    I am soooooooooooo jealous 😛

Aw, cute little guy. Looks like he had a good time. Shame they didn't send you home with the Fraggle Van, though. :/

My guess, Anonymous, is "No," in regards to the puppet question. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn out three or four Reds once production's a go. Depending on the variety of shots in the film (sounds like a huge scope!), my bet is they'll need several differently-designed puppets throughout shooting.

But I guess that doesn't necessarily exclude the Red used at the party from being one of them…

Wonderful! I really hope that this begins to pull together the threads that will make the movie possible. Nothing like a good party to get the publicity and interest…well, interested.

I do see what you mean by Red vs. Paps being a weird combo.

    Anonymous,

So many questions you have. Answer them, I will try:

1.) Not sure. Probably. We may change wardrobe or mechanics inside the head. Way too early to make that call.

2.) Most people don't submit storyboards with their script. However, I already have three sequences storyboarded, and like to use a lot of art. Maybe I will write a blog soon about my pitching process… everyone is different.

3.) Any brand made into a movie needs to retain the SPIRIT of what made it great in the first place. You can change a lot of things visually as long as the tone and the original creator's spark is in tact. And personally, I am sick and tired of photo-real animals ("Underdog"). Not fun, just creepy.

I know you arn't very involved in Hoodwinked 2, but do you have ANY idea of when a trailer might come out? I mean the movie is supposed to be released in only a few weeks right?

  • Cory Edwards Says:

On the Hoodwinked 2 front: I've heard a rumor that the release has been pushed to February. But nobody tells me anything.

  • AJ Says:

I suggest TAKING BACK THE 'HOOD.

    Coming 2012. Make it happen.

  • Mela Says:

Every time I see Karen & Red doing another appearance, it brightens my day. So does finally seeing some merch with Mokey!

Keep up the good work, Cory. After hearing your opinion on photo-realistic animated animals (or as I call them, talking demon zombie hounds), I know you're the right man for this job.

  • Anonymous Says:

Well Hoodwinked 2 was supposed to come out today. Still no official news?

  • AJ Says:

I walked into Burger King yesterday and was shocked to see a line of toys for Hoodwinked 2, including a 'Fast-Talking Twitchy.'

I don't suppose you had anything to do with that. But if you did, I'm going back and getting one.

Nice to see Karen Prell involved, I was lucky enough to get to meet her and work a little iwth her a few years back. I also had a puppet built in 2008 by Fraggle alumni Terry Angus.
